Welcome back to CLA Perspectives!
Yes - even as pumpkin spice lattes herald the end of summer,
we are still glowing from this season’s gorgeous music and artistic discovery.
While this week’s contributor was new to the CLA Faculty this year, he is no stranger to CLA. Michael Sheetz, NYC-based Music Director, Conductor, Collaborative Pianist, and Educator, attended the first ever CLA program in 2009 and then returned for seven (!) more summers with CLA Italy.
My first summer with CLA took place in 2009. I was a graduate student and had never formally studied abroad. I was quickly immersed in not just the Italian language and vocal repertoire, but in the magic that Italy has to offer. Novafeltria, and the spirit of CLA, spoke to my heart and spirit.
Fast forward to 2021, and I found myself hearing the tones of our next generation of opera stars and coaches at the Darrow School in New Lebanon, New York. Each day is an opportunity to make magic; to learn something new, to listen to others, and to respond to the individual I encounter in each coaching. The growth achieved over two weeks is remarkable and inspiring.
I often consider why I have been drawn to the values of CLA. It may be in the generosity of spirit and talent found in artistic director Glenn Morton’s vision; it could also be in the unforgettable performing opportunities found in the Emilia-Romagna region. Each summer brilliant students and colleagues arrive searching for artistic growth and nourishment, and always leave the program enriched and energized.
CLA provides a safe learning environment that meets everyone where they are in their experience and development. Real care is devoted to each student, to the phrases we sing, and to the music we perform. The work is grounded in the traditions of Italian bel canto and art song, but the aesthetics of CLA can inform and inspire music of any style.
I’ve made many friendships at CLA that will last a lifetime. It is a special, unique place that continues to foster joy and inspiration. The return of in-person performances at CLA 2021 was moving and beautiful, and I look forward to following the careers of our young performers in the future.
